A ring of fish ponds and old fortifications still frames Telč, a hilltop town in the Czech highlands whose marketplace is one of Europe's loveliest. After fire destroyed its original timber houses late in the 14th century, Telč rebuilt itself in stone; the burgher facades lining the main square and the castle, remodelled in High Gothic style late in the 15th century, survive remarkably intact. Telč entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992 alongside Prague and Český Krumlov.
