The Murray River forms the border between New South Wales and Victoria before crossing into South Australia, where it flows through limestone gorges, red gum forests, and historic river towns to Lake Alexandrina and the sea. Paddle-steamer journeys departing from towns such as Murray Bridge and Mannum recall the river's role as a commercial highway during the nineteenth century when flat-bottomed steamers carried wool and supplies. The limestone cliffs along the lower Murray near Loxton and Waikerie provide dramatic river scenery and nesting habitat for Murray rainbow bee-eaters.
