Painted Churches in the Troodos Region

Scattered through the valleys of the Troodos mountains, ten Byzantine churches and monasteries shelter some of the finest mural painting to survive from the medieval Orthodox world. Humble stone structures with steep timber roofs on the outside, they open onto interiors ablaze with frescoes tracing Byzantine and post-Byzantine art across centuries of Cypriot history — from tiny rural chapels to the monastery of St John Lampadistis. UNESCO inscribed the group as a World Heritage Site in 1985.
