Vigan is a city in Ilocos Sur on the northwest coast of Luzon and is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The Mestizo District (Calle Crisologo) is a cobblestoned street flanked by two-storey Ilocano-Hispanic houses whose lower floors served as warehouses for the lucrative Chinese trade. Kalesa horse-drawn carriages still move through the historic streets, particularly at dawn before motor traffic increases.
