The Banaue Rice Terraces are a system of ancient irrigated terraces carved into the Cordillera mountain range of northern Luzon by the Ifugao people over an estimated 2,000 years. The terraces, which rise to over 1,500 metres above sea level in some sections, are often described as the eighth wonder of the ancient world and form part of the UNESCO-inscribed Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras. The Batad amphitheatre, accessible by foot from a mountain saddle east of Banaue, presents the most intact and visually dramatic concentration of terraces.
