Singapore's Chinatown district, centred on the streets of Pagoda, Trengganu, Sago, and Smith, preserves a dense concentration of two- and three-storey shophouses built in a hybrid Straits Chinese architectural style between the 1840s and 1950s. The Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, which houses a relic attributed to the historical Buddha, anchor the cultural landscape.
