Kek Lok Si is the largest Buddhist temple complex in Southeast Asia, built on a hillside in Air Itam on Penang island beginning in 1891. The seven-tiered Ban Po Thar pagoda blends Chinese, Thai, and Burmese architectural styles, while a towering 30-metre bronze statue of Kuan Yin stands on the upper terrace. During Chinese New Year the complex is illuminated by tens of thousands of lanterns, drawing photographers from across the region.
