One of Bali's six key directional temples and a sea guardian shrine, Pura Uluwatu stands on a steep limestone headland on the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, approximately 70 meters above the Indian Ocean. The temple complex comprises several tiered shrines, split gateway portals, and pavilions shaded by ancient trees inhabited by a troop of macaques. The cliff-top location provides sweeping views over breaking swell and the arc of the southern Bali coastline, and traditional Kecak fire dance performances are held at the cliff edge at sunset.
