A United States Army transport ship torpedoed in 1942 during World War II, the USS Liberty was beached on the northeast Bali coast at Tulamben and pushed into the shallows by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963. The wreck now lies in 3 to 30 meters of water and has become one of the world's most accessible shore-dive shipwreck sites, densely colonized by coral and sponges and populated by hundreds of fish species. Macro photography subjects including ribbon eels, ghost pipefish, and pygmy seahorses are regularly found along the wreck structure.
