The second-largest island in the Lesser Sunda Islands chain, Lombok lies directly east of Bali and offers a distinct character defined by Sasak cultural traditions, the volcanic mass of Mount Rinjani in the north, and a long southern coastline of white-sand bays. The island sees significantly fewer international visitors than Bali, and its interior villages, traditional weaving communities, and coastal scenery remain comparatively undisturbed. Beaches on the south coast such as Tanjung Aan and Mawun are recognized among Indonesia's most beautiful.
