The main island and administrative center of the Banda archipelago in the central Moluccas, Banda Neira is defined by its Dutch colonial heritage and the volcanic backdrop of Gunung Api, an active cone rising from the adjacent island. Fort Belgica, built in 1611, stands largely intact above the town and commands views across the Banda Sea and the smoking summit of Gunung Api. The island's calm harbor, nutmeg groves, and remarkably preserved colonial streetscapes make it one of Maluku's most historically significant destinations.
