A volcanic mountain in central Flores containing three summit crater lakes, Kelimutu is remarkable for the distinctly different and periodically changing colors of its lakes — variously appearing turquoise, green, dark maroon, or black at different times due to varying mineral and gas concentrations. The two eastern lakes sit within a shared crater rim and are considered by local communities to be the resting places of ancestral souls. The sunrise walk from the upper car park to the crater rim is the standard approach, with clear mornings producing the most vivid color contrasts.
