One of the last places on Earth where Sumatran orangutans, tigers, rhinos, and elephants coexist in a single ecosystem, Gunung Leuser National Park covers 7,927 square kilometers of equatorial rainforest straddling the border of North Sumatra and Aceh provinces. The park forms part of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra UNESCO World Heritage site. Habitats range from coastal lowland forest to mountain cloud forest above 3,000 meters, supporting exceptional levels of plant and animal diversity.
