When Ionian Greeks from Paros divided this fertile plain on the island of Hvar in the 4th century BC, they laid out a geometric grid of fields — the chora — bounded by drystone walls and dotted with little stone shelters. Twenty-four centuries on, the pattern survives almost untouched, and the same grapes and olives are still grown. UNESCO inscribed Stari Grad Plain as a cultural landscape in 2008.
