Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian

Around AD 300 the emperor Diocletian retired to a colossal fortified palace on the Dalmatian coast, and the city of Split later grew inside its very walls. His mausoleum became the cathedral; his halls and gates now shelter Romanesque churches, Gothic palaces and Renaissance and Baroque houses, a living town wrapped around a Roman monument. UNESCO inscribed the historical complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian in 1979.
