The former imperial capital of the Nguyễn dynasty, Huế is centered on a walled Citadel complex that houses the Imperial City — a series of palaces, temples, and ceremonial gates modeled loosely on Beijing's Forbidden City. The Perfume River winds through the city and past a series of royal tombs scattered in forested hills to the south, each with a distinctive architectural character reflecting the personality of the emperor it commemorates. The city is also renowned for its refined cuisine, considered among the most elaborate in Vietnam.
