Vietnam's last emperors ruled from Hué, made capital of the unified country in 1802 and seat of the Nguyen dynasty until 1945. Through it winds the Perfume River, linking the walled capital, the Imperial City and the innermost Forbidden Purple City, and binding palaces, temples and royal tombs into a landscape of unusual grace. UNESCO inscribed the Hué monuments in 1993.
