Doi Mae Salong is a mountain ridge settlement at around 1,800 metres elevation in Chiang Rai Province, originally established by Kuomintang soldiers and their families who retreated from Yunnan after 1949. The community has developed into a tea-cultivation area whose oolong and green teas are sold throughout Thailand, and the hillsides are terraced with tea gardens that bloom in cooler months. The surrounding area is inhabited by Akha, Shan, and other highland communities. In cool season, morning sea-fog fills the valleys below, creating atmospheric viewpoints from the ridge road.
