Wat Rong Khun, commonly referred to in English as the White Temple, is a privately constructed Buddhist temple about 13 kilometres south of Chiang Rai city that has become one of the most photographed structures in Thailand. Designed and built by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat beginning in 1997, the structure is rendered entirely in white plaster inlaid with mirror glass, which creates a shimmering effect in sunlight. The approach bridge passes over a reflecting pool and features sculptural hands reaching upward. The interior murals blend Buddhist cosmology with contemporary popular culture imagery.
