Chiang Rai is the northernmost major city in Thailand, positioned near the borders of Myanmar and Laos in the upper reaches of the Kok River valley. The city is the gateway to the Golden Triangle and serves as a base for visits to hill tribe villages, tea plantations, and the white temple Wat Rong Khun. The Night Bazaar and clock tower plaza designed by local artist Chalermchai Kositpipat give the city distinct character. The surrounding province encompasses significant portions of the hill country historically associated with the Shan, Akha, and Lahu peoples.
