Phuket Old Town is the historic core of Phuket City, concentrated along Thalang, Dibuk, and Krabi roads and their side streets. The neighbourhood was shaped by Chinese Peranakan merchant culture during the island's tin-mining prosperity in the nineteenth century, producing a distinctive hybrid architectural style of Sino-Portuguese shophouses with shuttered facades, arcaded five-foot ways, and decorative tilework. Several Chinese shrines and family clan houses are active community institutions. The area hosts a colourful Vegetarian Festival each year in October.
