A large reservoir constructed in the 1920s under Japanese colonial rule, Wushantou (Coral Lake) features a series of peninsulas and inlets that create an irregular coastline of outstanding scenic quality. The reservoir is surrounded by camphor and acacia forest, and a bicycle path rings the water's edge. Spring brings a profusion of water hyacinth that covers the northern bays in a carpet of purple — one of Taiwan's most distinctive seasonal natural displays.
