A mountainous river-valley system in southern Taiwan's interior, Maolin is known above all for the largest overwintering migration of purple crow butterflies in Asia — up to one million individuals concentrate in valley forests between October and March. Beyond the butterfly phenomenon, the scenic area encompasses river-carved purple-schist gorges, Rukai aboriginal villages, and hot-spring facilities near the Wanshan settlement.
