A volcanic park on the hills directly north of Taipei, Yangmingshan encompasses active fumaroles, sulphur springs, caldera lakes, and high grassland plateaus within easy transit reach of the city centre. Qingtiangang, a broad high-altitude prairie plateau grazed by water buffalo, and Xiaoyoukeng — an active volcanic area of steaming vents and yellow sulphur deposits — represent the park's twin poles of scenic character.
