Known informally as 'Taiwan's Niagara' for its exceptional width relative to its height, Shifen Waterfall is a horseshoe-shaped cascade on the Keelung River near the Pingxi Branch Railway. The falls plunge 20 metres across a 40-metre curtain of water into a deep turquoise pool, and the surrounding canyon walls frame the scene on three sides. The Pingxi railway track running through the old street above is a separate attraction drawing sky-lantern visitors.
