A provincial city in the inland Yeongnam region, Andong is widely regarded as the heartland of Korean Confucian culture. Dosan Seowon, a 16th-century Confucian academy set along the Nakdong River, and Bongjeongsa, a temple complex containing Korea's oldest wooden structure, represent two poles of the city's deep historical legacy. The annual Andong Mask Dance Festival draws visitors from across the country.
