Centred on South Korea's highest peak at 1,950 metres, Hallasan is a shield volcano that dominates the interior of Jeju Island and is encircled by dense forest giving way to alpine meadows and a crater lake — Baengnokdam — near the summit. Multiple trail routes of varying difficulty cross ecosystems ranging from subtropical coastal vegetation to subalpine shrubland, making it a comprehensive hiking and nature destination.
