A samurai castle town in Akita Prefecture whose inner samurai quarter preserves six original bukeyashiki samurai residences with their gardens and storehouses intact along broad earthen-walled streets. The avenue along the Hinokinai River is lined with weeping cherry trees, a combination of architectural heritage and seasonal blossom that draws visitors each spring. The town is accessible by Shinkansen from Tokyo, making it among the most reachable of Japan's preserved samurai districts.
