A castle town in western Fukushima Prefecture defined by its role in the 1868 Boshin War, where the Aizu domain's fierce resistance to the new Meiji government and the self-sacrifice of the Byakkotai youth corps became foundational narratives of samurai loyalty in Japanese cultural memory. Tsuruga Castle, reconstructed in 1965, sits surrounded by cherry trees on the original stone foundations. The Higashiyama Onsen district east of the city provides traditional hot spring accommodation.
