Treasure fleets made Cartagena worth attacking, and Spain answered with the most extensive fortifications anywhere in South America. Behind the walls, the Caribbean port divides into three quarters: San Pedro with the cathedral and its Andalusian-style palaces; San Diego, home to traders and the middle ranks of society; and Getsemaní, the popular district. UNESCO inscribed the port, fortresses and monuments of Cartagena in 1984.
