A port city at the southern tip of Hokkaido with one of Japan's earliest Western-style settled districts, the Motomachi area, where Meiji-era consulate buildings, churches, and foreign trading houses line streets ascending toward Mount Hakodate. The view from the summit observatory at night, showing the city spread across a narrow isthmus with water on both sides, is consistently ranked among Japan's top three night views. The morning fish market below the mountain is a significant regional food attraction.
