A geothermal hot spring resort in southwestern Hokkaido, centered on Jigokudani or Hell Valley, a volcanic crater filled with sulfurous steam vents, boiling pools, and rust-colored geological formations. The valley's 11 types of hot spring water are distributed to bathhouses throughout the resort town below. Bear Park on the adjacent hillside maintains a large population of Hokkaido brown bears observable from close-range viewing platforms.
