A valley town in central Hokkaido set among farmland and ski mountains, internationally recognized for lavender fields that bloom across the surrounding plateau in July, producing bands of purple across an agricultural landscape with the Tokachi mountain range behind. Farm Tomita, the oldest commercial lavender operation in the area, draws visitors throughout summer for its multi-crop flower fields and distillery products. In winter the surrounding mountains form part of the Furano ski area.
