A crater lake in Akan Mashu National Park in eastern Hokkaido, occupying a caldera with walls rising up to 200 meters above the water surface, which has no inflowing or outflowing rivers and maintains exceptional transparency with measured Secchi depths among the highest recorded for any lake globally. The lake is frequently shrouded in morning fog that fills the caldera, creating a layered landscape of mist and caldera rim when viewed from the observation decks above. A small volcanic island at the center, Kamuishu, adds scale to the lake's expanse.
