A remote peninsula in northeastern Hokkaido projecting into the Sea of Okhotsk, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its intact marine and terrestrial ecosystems representing the southernmost extent of sea-ice formation in the Northern Hemisphere. The area supports dense populations of brown bears, Blakiston's fish owls, and Steller's sea eagles, and the nutrient-rich waters from seasonal ice melt sustain some of the most productive marine fisheries in Japan. Road access ends well before the peninsula's tip, with the wildest areas accessible only by boat or trail.
