Japan's largest national park, covering roughly 2,267 square kilometers of central Hokkaido's volcanic highlands and alpine tundra. The park contains Mount Asahi (Asahidake), Hokkaido's highest peak at 2,291 meters, accessible by ropeway and known for the earliest autumn foliage in Japan, typically beginning in early September. Hot spring towns including Sounkyo Onsen at the base of the Sounkyo Gorge provide accommodation within the park boundary.
