The southernmost point of Shikoku island, a dramatic headland where vertical granite cliffs drop to the Pacific Ocean at the convergence of the Kuroshio Current. The cape is the final destination of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage circuit, marked by the Kongofuku-ji temple. A white lighthouse on the cliff edge and the raw oceanic exposure of the coast give the location a quality of geographic finality distinct from more sheltered Japanese coastlines.
