One of Japan's oldest recorded hot spring baths, located in the city of Matsuyama on Shikoku island, with a main bathhouse building constructed in 1894 in the style of a three-story wooden pagoda. Literary and historical references to the spring appear as early as the eighth-century Manyoshu poetry collection, and the building itself has been designated a nationally important cultural property. The surrounding shopping arcade and ryokan district form an intact traditional spa quarter.
