An island in Hiroshima Bay known formally as Itsukushima, where the island's main Shinto shrine has been built over the tidal flats since the sixth century, creating the illusion at high tide that the entire complex floats on the water. The great torii gate standing in the sea approximately 200 meters offshore is one of Japan's most reproduced photographic compositions. At low tide, visitors can walk to the base of the gate.
