A small island in the Seto Inland Sea transformed since the 1990s into an internationally recognized site of contemporary art and architecture through the Benesse Art Site initiative. Works by James Turrell, Walter De Maria, and Yayoi Kusama are installed in dedicated museum structures designed by Tadao Ando, as well as in the open landscape and village buildings of the Honmura Art House Project. The island's rural fishing-village character persists alongside the art infrastructure.
