A well-preserved Edo-period merchant town in the Japanese Alps, whose historic center Sanmachi Suji retains dark wooden sake breweries, merchant houses, and small museums along three parallel streets. The town is also known for its Hida Folk Village open-air museum and its biannual festival featuring ornate floats called yatai. Surrounded by mountains, it serves as a gateway to the Northern Alps hiking routes.
