A mountain town north of Tokyo whose forested valley holds the lavishly decorated Tosho-gu shrine complex, built as the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Intricate polychrome carvings, gold lacquer, and elaborate gate structures distinguish Tosho-gu from the more restrained aesthetic of most Japanese religious architecture. The Shinkyo vermilion bridge and Kegon Falls in the adjacent Nikko National Park extend the area's draw.
