An oasis city at the edge of the Gobi Desert in far western Gansu, Dunhuang grew as a key waypoint on the Silk Road and is the gateway to the Mogao Caves and the Crescent Lake-Singing Sand Dunes complex. The Echoing Sand Mountain immediately south of the city offers camel trekking and sandboarding on dunes up to 250 metres high. Golden-hour light on the dunes and their reflection in the crescent-shaped oasis pool is the signature photographic image.
