A naturally formed crescent-shaped spring lake in a hollow among the Echoing Sand Mountain dunes, Crescent Lake has persisted for millennia despite surrounding desert encroachment. A small grouping of pavilions and willow trees occupies the lakeshore. The contrast of deep blue water and amber dune slopes, best seen from the ridge above at sunrise, makes this one of the most reproduced desert photographs from China.
