Discovered in 1974 by farmers near Xi'an, the Terracotta Army comprises thousands of life-size ceramic soldiers, horses, and chariots buried as funerary art in the mausoleum complex of the first Qin emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Three excavated pits are covered by protective museum halls; Pit 1 is the largest, containing ranks of infantry visible from an elevated walkway. Each warrior's face was individually sculpted.
