Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor

An army stands guard underground at the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, first unifier of China, who died in 210 BC: thousands of terracotta soldiers, no two faces alike, arrayed with horses, chariots and weapons in a complex modelled on the plan of his capital, Xianyang. Unknown until 1974, the site has yielded masterpieces of realism, and thousands more figures are thought to wait beneath the fields. UNESCO inscribed the mausoleum in 1987.
