Fuvahmulah is a single-island atoll in the south-central Maldives, notable as the only island in the country to have two freshwater lakes — Bandaara Kilhi and Dhadimagi Kilhi — sitting at sea level behind the beach ridge. The island's relative isolation from the main Maldivian atolls and its deeper surrounding waters produce unusual diving conditions: the outer reef drops quickly to significant depth and is known for tiger shark and thresher shark sightings. The island's self-contained geography and distinct dialect mark it as culturally distinct within the archipelago.
