Addu Atoll is the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, the only one that crosses the equator, and contains the former British Royal Air Force base at Gan — now converted to civilian use — whose long runway and wartime infrastructure offer a distinctly different historical layer to the archipelago. The atoll's six main inhabited islands are connected by a causeway road, making overland travel between them possible, unusual in the Maldives. British Loyalty, a fuel tanker sunk in the lagoon in 1946, is the atoll's signature wreck dive.
