Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park, occupying the northwest coast and centred on a series of natural lakes called villus — shallow depressions that fill seasonally and attract wildlife to open shorelines. The park was largely closed between 1988 and 2010 due to civil conflict and has since recovered substantial wildlife populations including leopard, sloth bear, elephant, and a diverse waterbird community. The relative scarcity of visitor vehicles compared to Yala makes wildlife photography here more likely to involve undisturbed subjects.
