Trincomalee is a natural deep-water harbour town on Sri Lanka's northeast coast, one of the largest natural harbours in Asia and historically significant as a British and Dutch naval base. The Koneswaram Kovil Hindu temple perches on Swami Rock, a promontory 130 metres above the sea, with a cliff-edge view across the harbour and open ocean. Pigeon Island Marine National Park offshore provides snorkelling access to reef habitats and a population of blacktip reef sharks.
